Message to my Colleagues

With the SCOTUS decision relating to Affirmative Action, we are not in the minority with doubt, confusion, frustration and anger. Aside from being “simply tired of being tired”, this note is to remind you of a few things:

  • Opportunity Programs are not diversity programs. Our students receive our support based on their academic performance, and potential for excellence.
  • Know the facts. Read, question, and get clarity. I’ve included a synopsis (PDF) I found that may be helpful to you.
Understand where your program sits at your institution. Over the years the intent of our programs have been blurred by references to “diversity” and its complex definition.
  • Respond, not react. I know that emotions run high, but when we are angry is when we lose sight of the prize, and the ability to think critically and strategically.
  • Look for the way “in” and “around”. We are survivors!!

Best,
Phyllis A H Breland, President, Tri-State Consortium of Opportunity Programs
