Dr. Robert E. Cortes, LCSW is the current director of the College Discovery Program at Queensborough Community College, the nation’s oldest opportunity program that was created in 1964. Prior to this role, Dr. Cortes spent the past 13+ years working in higher education as a member of the Counseling Center at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. Dr. Cortes has also been a licensed clinical social worker in the state of New York for the past 24 years, spending the first 11 years of his career serving families and children in foster care prevention social service agencies throughout the Bronx, Harlem, and Queens, NY.
Dr. Cortes is an alumnus of the City University of New York at Hunter College where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, an alumnus of Columbia University School of Social Work, where he received his Master of Science degree in Social Work, and most recently an alumnus of the St. John’s University School of Education where he received his Doctor of Education degree in May 2022. Dr. Cortes identifies as Filipino American Brown man of color and is a native of Queens, New York City. Most importantly, he is the proud father of two boys ages 8 and 6, and a daughter who is 19 years old.
